Hello! I am Katie Gipson McLean and I am running for Creighton Elementary School District Governing Board in 2022.
I grew up in East Phoenix and my family still resides in the Perry Park area. I attended Monte Vista Elementary School (1991-1998), the school now known as Biltmore Prep. (1998-2001, and I graduated from Camelback High School in 2005.
I was the first in my family to attend college and I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education, Social Studies in 2009. I am a proud member of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. and had the privilege of serving as a National Board Member, in various capacities, for over eight years.
After college, I moved to Portland, Oregon. Just like many of my Creighton and PUHSD classmates, I had never been away from home for an extended period of time. The job market was difficult to enter but I made it work. For five years I worked in various capacities in education and youth work. During that time, my husband was a high school math teacher. My time working in schools and the community with youth and their families forever changed my life for the better.
In 2014, I decided to go to law school. I attended Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon. Throughout law school I maintained my involvement in education and youth work through my involvement in high school mock trial programs and Street Law. I graduated with my Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2017.
Five years ago, I moved back home to Phoenix. I am currently employed as a Deputy Public Defender in Maricopa County. I live in my childhood home with my husband, Reese, and our two sons, Jay and Max. I enjoy spending time with family, listening to music, hiking, watching movies, watching the NBA (especially Suns basketball), and playing word games. I also devote quite a bit of time to community advocacy.
